Film Cocaine asked a few of the peeps on Facebook to try and exactly find out what in the world happened to certain actors. Did their careers die a horrible death? Did they give up on acting? Did they forget they’re world famous? Below is the latest expedition into what Film Cocaine is calling, HOLLYWOOD CAREER DEATH.

Many a person asked me about the following actor, both on Facebook and in real life. (Yes, I have a real life outside of film). So, I had to ask that ever elusive question, WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED TO ELIJAH WOOD?

Elijah Wood was one of Hollywood’s biggest heart throbs, with a well rounded career and friends in all the right places, Elijah was on his way to mass-stardom. He starred in a little film franchise, known as Lord of the Rings and he became the centerfold blue eyed hunk which many females (and males) drooled over. His performance in Deep Impact garnered him critical acclaim, a few years before the Rings franchise and he was quickly becoming a household name.

What went wrong with Elijah’s career? Bad choices? Horrible scripts? Box office bombers?

Elijah starred in a few powerful films after the Rings franchise which included Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Sin City, Green Street Hooligans and a small role in the film collectif called, Paris Je t’aime. Elijah faded after this and ended up in Hollywood career hell with the voice of a few well known characters in several animated films such as Happy Feet and Happy Feet Twobeing released later this year. Is it safe to say that Lord of the Rings completely destroyed his career? Yes. Elijah Wood invested a few years into becoming Frodo Baggins and reached a career peak with said franchise. In Hollywood, the danger of becoming part of such a franchise is that most actors lose their momentum after such a well known franchise. Daniel Radcliffe might also hit this slump after the end of Harry Potter. Elijah Wood is not done as an actor, as he is starring in The Hobbit which is slated for a 2012 and 2013 release date. This time, once again, as Frodo Baggins. Typecast much? This will be Elijah’s fourth and fifth film as exactly the same character. Elijah needs a miracle to get back onto track after the incessant typecasting of this specific character. Who knows, Elijah might kick start his career with the release of The Hobbit, but Film Cocaine highly doubts this. This might spell the end for an already lackluster career. Sorry, Elijah.

WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED TO SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR?

Sarah made some risky moves with her career. She weaved in and out of a popular television show (Buffy: The Vampire Slayer) to films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, Cruel Intentions and the Scooby Doo films. After the end of the super successful Buffy, Sarah starred in the well received The Grudge and somehow returned to the spotlight of Hollywood for the hype around The Grudge. This horror fest was the final moment in a charred career. Poor Sarah died a horrible Hollywood Career Death through not being able to follow up on The Grudge’s success. Sarah made a few straight-to-dvd releases and has no future projects currently planned. All’s well that ends well, Sarah. Who knows? She might be able to pick up the pieces of a limbless career and build herself back up into a Hollywood heavyweight. The chances are unlikely that Sarah Michelle Gellar will ever return as a Hollywood power player. It is a sad goodbye to a reasonably fun actress.

WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED TO JAMES VAN DER BEEK?

Little girls back in the late 90’s and early noughties fainted on a daily basis when Dawson’s Creek was still running. The release of Varsity Blues was a sign that James Van Der Beek was being cemented as a film actor too. Dawson’s Creek ended in 2003. James Van Der Beek ended his reign as an actor. Throughout film history, many actors faded into a deep, dark oblivion, never to be seen again. I highly doubt any recent career crashed and burned as much as James Van Der Beek’s. He released a few independent films in the past few years, but he was never able to achieve the success he once had. James Van Der Beek’s career is one of Hollywood’s most infamous career deaths. Blame it on poor choices, blame it on a young Hollywood boom, James will never truly be known as a Hollywood actor. His career is currently being cremated in television production hell.

Who do you think deserves a place on What In The World Happened To…?

The continuation of our list commences!

For the hottest male actors in the world, here is the list as voted on by YOU.

Number 5.

Our number 5 spot, with the least amount of votes after the second round goes to a model-turned-actor-turned-model-turned-actor-turned-Hollywood- Hearthrob.

His claim to fame came in the first and the best Step Up. He also had lesser known roles in films such as She’s The Man with the annoying Amanda Bynes and also recently garnered critical acclaim for his role in the Nicholas Sparks novel-to-film, Dear John with up and comer, Amanda Seyfried.

His name is Channing Tatum. One of the hottest male actors to ever grace the silver screen with less than stellar performances, but a career bulging with enticement!

a

a

a

Number 4.

Film Cocaine’s number 4 spot goes to a lesser known film actor who starred in some terrible films which include the box office failure and universally panned, Pulse. He makes for a wonderful vampire as his greatest claim to fame so far has been as Damon Salvatore in the very, very popular Vampire Diaries.

Ian Somerhalder. The actor with the eyes as some people call him. He received the second least amount of votes, but this does not deter from the fact that he is surely becoming television’s latest and hottest heart throb.

a

a

a

Number 3.

The number 3 spot is for an actor all the way from Scotland. He has redefined the infamous opinion that rough and tumble guys are just that. Gerard Butler is a powerful actor with a surprisingly efficient performance in the box office masterpiece, P.S. I Love You. His films in the past year or so have been less than stellar with the Razzie nominated, The Bounty Hunter starring alongside number 2 on our previous list, Jennifer Aniston.

Gerard Butler’s roughness translates well into him becoming one of the most sought after hunks in Hollywood.

a

a

a

Number 2.

A very, very famous face. A wonderful actor. A Buddhist. An amazing person. Number two on our list, with the second most amount of votes, Richard Gere.

Richard Gere has been a Hollywood heavyweight for years. Female(and some male) audiences have lusted over him for years. He is one of the most exquisite actors in Hollywood and has been loved by critics and audiences alike for the past 3 decades.

His recent films include the wonderful Hachiko: A Dog’s Story and the slightly melodramatic drama, Amelia with fading actress, Hilary Swank.

Richard deserves his second place, being one of the most beautiful men to have ever lived.

Now, for the number 1 spot and the male actor who takes the title as the Hottest Actor In The World…

a

a

a

a

a

a

a

He was voted as our most overrated actor. He has his own private island. Women and some men die when they see him on the screen. Seriously, one lady once died from heart failure after seeing him on Mnet one night.

He received the highest amount of votes of all the potential contenders, male and female. He is our brooding number 1 spot… None other than…

a

a

a

a

a

a

Johnny Depp

This brooding actor is famous for his Tim Burton roles and as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates franchise. Johnny Depp has always been reinventing himself to become one of the most well known faces in the world.

Congratulations Johnny. You join Julia Roberts as the title holder of the HOTTEST FILM STARS IN THE WORLD!

Congratulations Johnny! Film Cocaine salutes you!

Did the voters get it right? Or is this a political faux pas? Comments are welcome!

Film Cocaine does not intend to be a blog detailing the bags of gossip garbage which so many other blogs write about. We’re serious about film and so should you be, but sometimes, one needs to lighten up a bit and write a fluff piece about the hottest film stars in the world.

Film Cocaine took a Facebook vote recently and decided to come up with this list, with the top 5 male and female film stars with the highest amount of votes. Film Cocaine had no say in compiling this list as this blog is a serious and objective film blog, but without the fear of becoming too pretentious, here we go!

FEMALE

Number 5.

In our number 5 spot, as voted by the Facebook peeps at WSJ, this beautifully matured actress who once was married to Mr. Die Hard himself came in the 5th spot after the second vote. She is now married to none other than the new Two and A Half Men lead, Ashton Kutcher.

Guess who?

Demi Moore rose to stardom in the early 90’s with films such as St. Elmo’s Fire, Ghost, A Few Good Men and Disclosure. In recent years, Demi has not been too successful with fading film career and starred in critical and box office failures such as The Joneses. Demi is one extremely beautiful woman and deserves to be on this list of sexiest female film stars in the world!

a

a

Number 4.

This luscious Spanish beauty is famous for her pout and take-me-to-bed-eyes. She came 4th in the second vote and deserves a spot on this list due to her varied choice of film and being a serious actress.

Eva Mendes is one extremely sexy woman!

She gained stardom in Fast and The Furious with the defunct Paul Walker and continued to rise in the ranks of Hollywood with films such as Hitch where she starred alongside the popular Hollywood kid, Will Smith. There are still great things on the horizon for Eva Mendes and she is seen in Hollywood as a “gutsy and cool gal”. Film Cocaine agrees!

a

a

Number 3.

We’re getting down to the wire. Number 3 on this list is given to the Hollywood darling of our modern age, none other than the recent Oscar Winner, Sandra Bullock.

Sandra Bullock’s career spans further than most people are able to count. She is a tough cookie, after suffering from extreme heartache after the infidelity of her husband, Jesse James, weeks after she took home her first acting Oscar for The Blind Side (which was one of her greatest acting performances to date), Sandra bounced back and became even more beautiful than before!

Sandra Bullock deserves her spot on this list due to her fame and her inspiring attitude as one of the biggest female power players in Hollywood.

Film Cocaine loves you Sandra!

a

a

Number 2.

This Hollywood bomb shell was once a “friend” and then she ended up in the Pitts. Cliched puns aside, Jennifer Aniston was one of the only actors from the Friends cast that became a Hollywood heavyweight. Her oh-shucks-I-am-hot appeal and her famous hairdo’s have given her a chance to explode onto Hollywood, reinvent herself and become headline news over night. It doesn’t hurt to be known as the ex-wife of Brad Pitt.

Jennifer Aniston deserves the number 2 spot due to her famous boyfriends, blockbuster films and audience appeal which is unparalleled since the olden days of Hollywood. Jen Aniston is not a critical darling, but no-one cares, Jennifer is a very, very beautiful woman.

And now, our coveted number one spot. Who will become our reigning Hottest Actress In The World?

Drum roll please?

With the most votes on both our surveys and one of the most influential actresses to EVER have lived, none other than the critical favourite and who was once the highest paid actress in the world…

TADUM!

JULIA ROBERTS

Julia Roberts has always been one of the most powerful actresses to ever have graced the silver screen. She has some of the biggest and most influential films in movie history to her belt. She gave all of it up for a married life and children and only recently made a comeback with the wonderful, Eat Pray Love. Julia Roberts is not merely a popular actress, but an inspirational female figure throughout the world. From Ghana to Greece. From Australia to Austria. From USA to UK. There is no one on this planet who’ve not heard of Julia Roberts. This includes all those non-contacted tribes in Papa New Guinea.

Congratulations to the popular and gracious Julia Roberts for being voted THE HOTTEST ACTRESS IN THE WORLD! Film Cocaine salutes you!

Hottest Horrors

Posted: August 14, 2011 in List!
Tags: , , ,

Facebook research has never hurt anyone, so I decided to find out from Facebook peeps which they think are the best horror films of all time.

Let Film Cocaine present the best horrors presented by the kind Facebook folk and then, Film Cocaine’s top 3 list of greatest horror films EVER made.

EVENT HORIZON

The terrifying shenanigans in Event Horizon deserve a special mention. Released in 1997, directed by Paul W. Anderson (Resident Evil) and starring the exquisite Laurence Fishburne (Apocalypse Now, The Matrix), this film scared its’ audience with dark lighting, hallucinatory responses and the sensation of PURE evil whilst watching the film. It is a modern day creep-fest which gave many brave audiences wet seats in the cinema.

“Event Horizon, have to agree with JP – nothing else has freaked me out that much before or since.”

FILM COCAINE:

Zane Marc Gentis, Film Cocaine is in agreement. Event Horizon was one of the most terrifying films ever created. Not due to the BOO moments, but the essence of what made this film such a cult classic, the really, REALLY terrifying realization that something evil happened out there in the middle of the cold emptiness of space…

THE GRUDGE

The American remake of The Grudge was released in 2004 and starred the now defunct Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy The Vampire Slayer). The film contained elements of classic Asian horror and also a truly creepy dead child with a death rattle in his throat.  Takashi Shimizu (The original Ju-On director) took the helm of this horror fest and gave it an equally disturbing make-over. The Grudge redefined popular American horrors and came a close second after the exceptional American remake of The Ring. The Grudge was so popular that pop culture parodied the dead kid to death (no cliched pun intended).

“The Grudge”. ED: A lovely little Facebook heart was on the right hand side of the quote.

FILM COCAINE:

Agreed! The Grudge redefined the genre to American audiences and gave the more sinister original a Hollywood creep appeal. The difference between the two? Hollywood enjoys an adrenaline fueled jump every now and then.

CARRIE

Ah, one of the greatest classic horror films EVER made. Carrie was released in 1976 to an unsuspecting audience. The novel was written by Stephen King and starred a much younger Sissy Spacek (JFK), Piper Laurie (Children of a Lesser God) and Steven Spielberg’s ex wife, Amy Irving (Hide and Seek). This tension fueled work shop on how NOT to treat a fellow psychic class mate became one of the most popular cult classics ever made. Directed by the sensational Brian De Palma (Scarface), Carrie truly is a powerful tour de force in both film making and terror. The scene with the blood on Carrie at the school prom is one of the most iconic scenes in the history of horror cinema and as every horror film aficionado SHOULD know, is also seen as one of the most powerful scenes in horror cinema, bar none.

“Carrie – Brian De Palma”

FILM COCAINE:

Yes, Peter, your choice is truly exceptional. Carrie is an iconic classic and is one of the most important horror films to watch before you die. John Travolta deserves special recognition for his bit role in Carrie. An exemplary choice. Carrie MUST be watched. It won’t be forgotten easily and will influence your horror film watching until the day you die.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

Remember the days when you were too young to watch Nightmare? You wanted to watch Freddy Kruger slice open people in their dreams! One of the most influential horror films of the past 3 decades. A Nightmare On Elm Street created an entire franchise which is still popular after the extremely disappointing remake in 2010. The Nightmare films contained the perfect recipe of horror and cemented Wes Craven as the god of horror cinema in the United States.

A scary, burnt pedophile in your dreams, who planned to slice open your gut and spill the gory contents on the floor. Terrifying. The now defunct Heather Langenkamp, with her ingenue performance, gave Nightmare on Elm Street exactly what it required, a horror heroine. Most film historians agree that the almost unidentifiable line between reality and dreams is what made this film so unique, much like the brilliant Inception. The audience never knew what was reality and what was Freddy’s nightmare and the mistrust created in the audience’s perceptions is what garnered this film and its’ weak B-film franchise, universal acclaim.

Gisela Valcarcel – ” A Nightmare on Elm Street- Wes Craven aaaall the way.”

FILM COCAINE:

Yes! Yes! Yes! Wes Craven truly is the idol of modern day horror/slasher cinema. A Nightmare on Elm Street was his baby and one of his greatest creations. The original Scream and Scream 4 are a close second. Thank you, Gisela, for choosing this beaut classic!

SPECIAL RECOGNITION:

No exclusion is an option, so these are the films that receive special recognition as presented by Facebook peeps.

FILM COCAINE TOP 3 HORROR FILMS

The top 3 greatest horror films ever made as presented by Film Cocaine are:

3. Martyrs

A deeply unsettling French horror/thriller combo. One of the most disturbing films EVER made. Martyrs is on this list due to its’ emotionally wrenching and soul destroying quality. It is terrifying, life changing and deserves the top three spot due to its’ literal levels of intensity as the film progresses. A mixture of horror, surrealism, terror, existentialism and spiritual symbolism, Martyrs is released to its’ audience at the beginning of the second act  through one of the most nauseating and gut wrenching shooting sprees ever witnessed in cinema. Some will argue that Martyrs is not a horror, therefore does not deserve a spot on this list. I disagree. Martyrs IS a horror and is one of the most realistic horror films I have ever seen.

2. The Shining

The Shining deserves this spot due to the utter hallucinatory terror contained in this film. REDRUM, Johnny’s Here and that screeching sound when Danny links up psychically with the Chef, are three of the most intense moments in horror cinema history. Stanley Kubrick, quite possibly one of the greatest directors to have ever lived, brought this novel by Stephan King to life in horrifying, cry-worthy terror. Kubrick was infamous for his repetition of filming and Shelly Duval (Wendy) was driven to a nervous breakdown by the incessant repetition and mental fatigue Kubrick induced in his actors. She was quoted as saying that The Shining was the moment she lost her mind. This director/actor tete-a-tete gave the film an intense and hysterical atmosphere. It is seen by most film historians as one of the most terrifying films ever created. I agree, The Shining scared me into a stupor.

And now, for our coveted number one spot, the greatest horror film ever made –

1. The Exorcist

Tubular Bells, demonic possession, Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, subtle imagery flashing onscreen of a demon’s face, screaming, Latin, green vomit and urinating on a carpet. The Exorcist is seen by many as one of the most terrifying films ever released. In fact, it was so terrifying that people fainted in cinemas and were treated for shock, back when the film was released in 1973. There is no greater fear than watching this quite innocent young girl (played fantastically by Linda Blair) turn into a demon of note. The terror contained in The Exorcist is to this day, unrivaled. For me, one of the moments where I concluded that film is my passion came from The Exorcist, when Regan (Blair) was laughing demonically at the priests (which included the brilliant Max Von Sydow) and screamed with one of the most blood curdling screams ever heard on cinema. It terrified me beyond anything I have ever experienced before and to this day, whenever I watch The Exorcist, I sleep with lights on for months on end. The Exorcist is not easily digestible and leaves you with life changing sub-conscious imagery which is burnt into your memories until the day you die. The Exorcist truly is, THE most terrifying film ever made.

FILM COCAINE NOTE: A special thank you to everyone that partook in this little survey of hottest horrors. You’re welcome to (dis)agree with our choices. What do you think? Did we get it right with our top three greatest horror films ever made?
